There are many fields in engineering but none has become as ubiquitous and dominant as civil engineering. This field encompasses a broad range of activities including construction, maintenance and repair of physical structures, such as buildings and bridges; the design and construction of materials; and the utilization of information technology for efficient and economical performance. The engineering discipline also encompasses the scientific study of how nature and human beings interact with one another.
Civil engineering jobs typically require students to have a bachelor’s degree and a significant amount of course work completed before beginning employment. Although most positions require only a bachelor’s degree, there are some positions that do not require a Bachelor’s degree at all in order to apply. In some cases, engineering positions require only a master’s degree. Students who earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering are qualified for positions in several different fields. The types of positions available range from principal research scientist, project coordinator, technical assistant, to laboratory technician or to industrial engineers.
Civil engineers must often take additional education after getting their bachelor’s degree, although many schools now offer online educational programs. Some colleges and universities allow students to declare a double major. This means that you can take two classes in the field of engineering. For example, a student may choose to major in civil engineering and also choose to take courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, and environmental science. The double major gives students a better understanding of the subjects they wish to study, as well as a broader range of courses to complete.
In order to be accepted into a master’s engineering program, engineers must first take and pass a rigorous exam administered by the Council on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs or CAHAEP. Students can then enter an accredited college or university that offers the program they wish to pursue. There are currently more than 250 accredited engineering programs in the United States. In order to enroll in one of these programs, students must first complete a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school or college plus pass a test administered by CAHAEP.
Online engineering degrees take about three years to complete. In addition to having the opportunity to attend classes around your schedule, you will also have the opportunity to work at your own pace. Students who already have a bachelor’s degree but would like to earn an associates or a master’s degree would do well to consider earning an online bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering.
Most engineering programs require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. A number of colleges and universities also offer technical and professional certificate programs, which typically take four years to complete. Many engineers elect to further their education by earning a Master’s degree, MBA, and doctorate.
